A 2026 experimental study looked closely at oxidative modification of skin collagen. Researchers observed that oxidative reactions could form protein radicals and alkoxyl radicals and contribute to fragmentation of type I collagen under experimental conditions.
This does not tell us how fast collagen is changing in any one person, and it does not mean oxidative stress explains every change in ageing skin. What it does give us is mechanistic evidence that oxidative chemistry can directly affect collagen structure. That helps explain why oxidative stress and collagen breakdown are relevant to the wider conversation about skin longevity.
Where sunlight enters the story
Sunlight is one of the clearest examples of an outside influence that can add to oxidative pressure in skin. Chronic ultraviolet exposure is an important driver of photoageing, and current research describes it as a connected process involving oxidative stress, DNA damage, inflammatory signalling and degradation of the extracellular matrix.
For us in New Zealand, the practical message is simple: sun protection does the heavy lifting for avoidable UV exposure.
