Most conversations about collagen focus on how much we make or how much we take. But a collagen fibre does not disappear the moment it is built. Some collagen in the skin stays around for years, so what happens to those fibres after they are made matters too.

That is where glycation and collagen meet. Glycation happens when sugars react with proteins without an enzyme directing the reaction. In long-lived skin proteins such as collagen, those reactions can gradually contribute to advanced glycation end products, or AGEs, and extra cross-links that change how the collagen behaves. It is one part of skin ageing, not the whole story, and it is very different from saying that one sweet food directly creates a wrinkle.

Start with the collagen that is already there

Here, we are interested in something more specific: the chemistry that can happen to an existing collagen fibre over time.

Normal collagen has cross-links that help stabilise its structure. Glycation can add a different kind of chemical modification. Over time, some of those reactions can progress towards AGEs and extra cross-links between proteins. The result is not that collagen suddenly vanishes. It is that the material itself can become chemically altered.

When sugar meets a protein

Saying that sugar meets collagen is useful shorthand, but the chemistry has several steps. Certain reducing sugars can react with amino groups on proteins without an enzyme controlling the process. That is why glycation is called a non-enzymatic reaction.

Early sugar-protein products can then go through further reactions. Some become more stable, and some contribute to the varied group of compounds known as advanced glycation end products.

This is different from glycosylation, which is a regulated biological process where cells use enzymes to attach sugars in a controlled way.

Glycation also happens as part of normal metabolism. The useful question is not how to make it disappear completely. It is how repeated exposure over time may affect long-lived proteins such as collagen.

Following one collagen fibre over time

Imagine a collagen fibre sitting in the dermis doing its structural job. At first, it is simply part of the normal extracellular matrix around skin cells.

Then an early sugar-protein interaction occurs. That does not mean the fibre is destroyed. The protein has been modified at a chemical level.

Some early products remain relatively simple. Others move through further reactions and contribute to later-stage glycation products. As AGEs accumulate, they can create additional cross-links within and between long-lived proteins.

Those cross-links matter because collagen needs the right balance of strength and flexibility. More cross-linking can make collagen networks stiffer and less able to move and deform in the way healthy tissue normally does. A 2026 review of skin glycation describes AGE accumulation in dermal collagen and elastin alongside increased cross-linking and reduced elasticity.

This is the distinction worth remembering: glycation can chemically change existing collagen, and that is different from simply losing collagen.

Why collagen has more time to collect changes

Many proteins in the body are made, used and replaced relatively quickly. Dermal collagen is much slower to turn over. An established review on AGEs and skin ageing notes slow turnover for important skin collagen types, which gives glycation-related modifications more time to accumulate.

That is one reason skin longevity is not only about making new collagen. It is also useful to understand what can happen to collagen that is already woven into the skin's structure.

Ageing skin is influenced by many other things too, including ultraviolet exposure, smoking, nutrition, genetics and normal changes in collagen production and breakdown. Glycation belongs inside that bigger picture rather than replacing it.

Glycated does not mean destroyed

It is easy to picture glycated collagen as broken collagen, but that is too simple. Glycation can change how collagen molecules interact and can increase cross-linking and stiffness within the extracellular matrix.

AGEs can also take part in cell signalling through receptors such as RAGE, which researchers connect with oxidative and inflammatory processes. That biology is important, but you do not need to memorise the signalling details to understand the practical point: glycation can affect both the physical behaviour of long-lived proteins and the environment around them.

So when we talk about glycated collagen, think chemical modification, extra cross-links and altered flexibility, not instant destruction.

Does sugar on your plate become a wrinkle?

No. One dessert does not travel straight to your face and create a visible line.

Glycation chemistry is influenced by the sugar environment inside the body over time. Greater glucose exposure can increase the opportunity for glycation reactions, so a pattern of very high added-sugar intake is one potentially modifiable factor. But skin ageing is multifactorial, and food should not be reduced to a fear story about sugar.

For most people, the sensible approach is much less dramatic: keep added sugars sensible, build most meals around nutrient-rich whole foods, include enough protein and vitamin C, and keep enjoying fruit and other nourishing carbohydrate foods as part of a balanced diet.

If you are concerned about persistent high blood glucose, diabetes or another medical issue, talk with your GP or another qualified health professional rather than trying to manage it through skin advice.

Can glycated collagen be changed back?

This is where the evidence boundary matters.

Researchers are investigating ways to reduce AGE formation and AGE-related effects. A 2025 review covers a wide mix of experimental, animal, topical and human studies, while the 2026 skin review notes that stronger clinical validation is still needed for many approaches.

That means it is too broad to say science has closed the door on every possible way AGE-related changes might be modified. It also means there is no good basis for telling customers that an ordinary food, skincare product or dietary supplement can simply de-glycate human skin, remove established AGE cross-links, or return old collagen to a completely unglycated state.

Another useful distinction is this: reducing glycation pressure is not the same as proving that established AGE cross-links can be removed.

A useful collagen study, with an important catch

A 2023 randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study gives us a good example of why formulation details matter. It included 31 people aged 47 to 87 who took either 5 g per day of a specific fish-derived collagen peptide product or placebo for 12 weeks.

The researchers reported lower measured skin AGE levels in the collagen peptide group. But there are several details you need before turning that result into a broad collagen claim. Skin AGE level was a secondary endpoint, the study was small, the collagen was fish-derived, the daily amount was 5 g, and the peptide product was specifically enriched in prolyl-hydroxyproline and hydroxyprolyl-glycine.

That study does not show that every collagen supplement reduces AGEs. It certainly does not show that our Collagen Infusion lowers skin AGEs.

Our current Collagen Infusion is a different product: it provides 1500 mg of bovine collagen peptides per three-capsule serve, alongside 225 mg Natural Antioxidant Fruit Complex, including 80 mg phenolic antioxidants, plus 80 mg non-acidic vitamin C. Results from the specific 5 g fish-collagen formulation should not be transferred to our formula.

So where does Puraz fit?

The study limitation does not make collagen support irrelevant. It simply means the right question is what a product actually provides, rather than borrowing a result from a different formulation.

Understanding glycation is useful, but it should not crowd out the basics that matter for skin over time.

Adequate overall protein gives your body amino acids to work with, while vitamin C is needed for normal collagen synthesis. A varied whole-food diet also brings a wider mix of nutrients, and keeping added sugars sensible is a more realistic goal than chasing dietary perfection.

Research is still evolving. Some approaches are being studied for reducing AGE formation or AGE-related effects, but customers should not expect a food, skincare product or normal dietary supplement to simply erase established AGE cross-links from human skin.

Can collagen supplements reduce skin AGEs?
